He writes, one evening; while he lay sleeping, the devil appeared!
He leapt toward Saint Anthony; then pouncing on him, he grabbed our Saint by the throat and began choking him.
He applied such excruciating pressure, he was about to overpower him, when summoning his last ounce of breath, our Saint rebuked him.
Anthony of Padua invoked the name of the most precious Virgin Mary!
Then making the Sign of the Cross on his forehead (by so doing, calling upon the Blessed Trinity - the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit), he sent the enemy of mankind plummeting down into the pits of hell.
The spirit of death gone, Saint Anthony felt immediately relieved, the pain was gone, and God, once again wasting nothing, turned a negative into a positive!
Finding this incident in the Saint's life led to a practice, down through the ages, of devotees of Saint Anthony, praying and carrying Saint Anthony's Brief with them wherever they went.
So powerful was the impact this had on the Church, Pope Sixtus V had Saint Anthony's Brief inscribed on the obelisk in front of St. Peter's Basilica.
